Hi there,
I just bought all the components for my PC en build it myself. After completion I didn't run CPU tests. So 1 week later I tested my CPU temps at 100% load and the temps went between 92 and 100 degrees Celsius instant. And it didn't drop at all. I removed my CPU cooler and paste and did it again. A big dot on the centre of de cpu and spread it out. After an other test, same happend!
What do I need to do, so that I don't destroy my CPU?
I have a I7 4790K and a Cooler master hyper 212 EVO cooler.
Thnx in advance

So the CPU cooler is not hot at all ? are you sure you installed you CPU cooler correctly ? maybe post some pictures. So we can see how you installed CPU cooler. if you still have your stock CPU cooler try installing it.

How to install Intel stock cpu cooler :

if temps are still the same maybe your CPU temp sensor is broken

No not hot at all. I think i stalled it correctly yea, according to the manual. I have some pictures I hope they are clear.
And I still have the stock cooler indeed so maybe I put that one on it before I damage the CPU. Or am I not damaging the CPU because me PC doesn't freeze or restart?

it looks fine to me but just to be sure, try installing stock cooler and see if temps change.
You can still damage CPU without it freezing or restarting.

What is your Idle temp ? maybe you are putting to much of thermal past on your CPU here you can check how to apply thermal paste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2p6Hk4IfqI

It would be the best if you still have stock cooler with factory applied thermal paste. anyway just try with stock cooler and report if temps are lower

Hi,
First I tried to apply the same cooler again with some lesser thermal compound.
This is how much I used this time:
pdSR2xZAj

Temps are now between 88 and 95. so not a great improvement.

When I feel the part that is mounted on the CPU itself (Red arrow) it feels very warm ( not 100 degrees). And when I feel the copper pipes they are normal temp. (green arrow). Strange?
and the cooler still doesn't feel hot at all.
I'm going to install the stock cooler in a min.

yea I already watched a video of how to install it. Did it the correct way.
The stock cooler is installed and I get the same high temps, the only differents is that when I stop the test, it takes more time till the temps drop.
I also have an Enermax cooler here, maybe i can try to install that one? with just a little thermal compound?

Too bad my friends don't have the same socket CPU. Maybe I can lend 1 from a computer store nearby.
No the CPU isn't overclocked, just it's normal 4,0 GHz. Yea the fan increases greatly. from a around 500 rpm to 900+ rpm.

900 Rpm seems really low. For example, my stock cpu cooler fan's range is from about 2,400 up to 3,800 RPM. I set the range (or more specifically at what temp. the fan starts ramping up) by using software that came with my motherboard. I hava a Gigabyte MB and it came with Easytune6.

yea sorry you are right, the RPM was indeed around 2200. I used the wrong program.
but even if I set fan speed in BIOS to MAX all the time it still gets the insane temps.
the cooling paste from CM is good? and I only use a small drop...

You may be just getting faulty (incorrect) temperature readings. Try this as a test. In the BIOS, there should be a setting for what temperature the computer shuts down to protect the CPU. Set it to 72c, save and exit the BIOS. Then run something that will stress the processor for 30 minutes or so. If the temperatures are indeed over 72c, it will shut down. From what I have read 72c is the max temperature Intel recommends for that processor.

uhm sorry mjsalkeridge but I don't know how to change that in bios, can't find anything to change the max CPU temp to 70 or so.
Also I update the bios, but also that didn't work.:(

I knew which motherboard you had from the pictures you posted earlier. I was confused about the version #'s on the ASUS website under Manuals and Documents. The version #'s refer to the date the manual was updated, language, etc. You do have the latest BIOS.

Per the manual, under chapter 3.7, Monitor Menu/Fan Speed Control/Cpu fan Profile, if you set it to manual it says "the following items appear only when you set the CU Fan Profile to [Manual]". The first choice is CPU Upper Temperature, The values range from 20c to 75c. Try adjusting it there. Also per the pictures in the manual concerning the various BIOS settings, it looks like on the far right of the screen there is a Hardware Monitor section that shows Frequency and Temperature, among other things while you are still in the BIOS. I think you have to enable this option to see the Hardware Monitor.

What is your CPU Temp while in the BIOS?
