Hello,

I currently have 2x2GB DDR3 @ 1066 Mhz Ram (not sure which brand), I want more so I want to upgrade to 8GB instead of 6 because I wont be able to set dual channel mode in it. The only problem is that it has only 2 DIMM slots and the Dell manual says it supports only upto 4GB, but I googled about it and have seen people successfully running 8GB with BIOS update but some claiming that only crucial sticks will work, is that so? why brand specific ram would only work, why not all?

P.S. Is there any particular tool/software I can run to determine whether my system would support 8GB ram or not? please let me know

Thanx in advance!

sorry for late reply. According to crucial, optiplex 380 would work with 4x2GB DDR3, have a look at this
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/optiplex-380-mini-tower
I recently tested 4GB kingston RAM of 1666 Mhz which didnt worked and I was told by one of the local retailers that 1066Mhz would work with your system, is that true?

well , Intel the chipset maker says upto 8G DDR2 and upto 4G DDR3 ... so Crucial could be mistaken.

Well this sucks that we are forced to stick to 4GB RAM max only in this era..

Hi I have just purchased a optiplex 380 Sff, no memory no hdd & no optical drive, but the case was mint and thats why I bruoght it, however I was given a even better case so I used that, this was some time ago, just recently I had a look at the optiplex and found that I had a hdd "well who hasn't" I also had dell optical drive from a laptop, did a bit of research loads of people selling 8Gig @ £50/65 I hate sending stuff back thats why Ive got so much grap, anyway jumped on to Crucial and after what seemed like an age, I found 8Gig for £35 including tax & shipping 3 days later I stuck it all together and no problemo, works great.

Regards Peter. good luck
