I am on my 1st build and want to make sure that this is going to go smooth. Does anyone know if the ASRock 970 EXTREME4 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 5 x SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS is compatible with the AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core Vishera Processor 3.5GHz Socket AM3+????

Parts picker states this: Compatibility Notes

Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs.

Thanks in advance for the help

Solution

Intel CPU's and AMD boards are not at all compatible. I was suggesting an Intel based CPU and the $66 MB that I mentioned would be good.

Thanks Spooky, is the ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard or the ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard a better board?

Or shall I just stick with the Extreme 4?

Only issue is I am trying to stay around the $50 mark for budget reasons? I guess I could pick a different set of Memory to save alittle there? Which is more important, memory or Motherboard?

This board is a lot better.

GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3P
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128651\

Has 8+2 phase CPU VRM power design for AMD high-TDP CPU support, so it won't have any problem with the higher voltage, 8-core CPU's.

Your MB is more important than memory. You can get just about any 2x4GB memory kit on-sale and be a happy camper.

OK I have taken both of your advice and changed the MB to the Gigabyte 970-ud3p.

Now which replacement Memory?

$37 Corsair XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333
$38 Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
$41 G.Skill NS Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
$42 G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600

thats wht you shoudl be looking at & it really needs an aftermarket cooler too in all honesty.

If you cant budget the above then go for the 6300 instead

OK I have changed those 3 items to the recommendations

and the Sapphire Radeon R9 270X 2GB GDDR5 DVI-I/DVI-D/HDMI/DP Dual-X with Boost and OC Version PCI-Express Graphics Card 11217-01-20G is compatible with all this right?

The issue is I just know enough to get myself into trouble. Therefore I dont know what "8+2 phase vrm that 4+1 " mean?

What board would you then recommend? i dont really wana spend more than $70, thats about the budget

asrock extreme 9 or gigabyte 990fx ud3 rev4 or 5 thing is with amd AM3+ your looking at a near 6 year old platform I will recommend intel

its am3+ that drove me over to intel for my first time in 15 years

there a feew good boards out there to get [AM3+] but why buy the past today and maybe starting to show its age with todays games and programs ?? ??? [opinion]

but that's just me and how I see it ...

so what intel board would you recommend for around $70?

don't know ? with intel you got to pay the piper a chip that will do you good is around 180- 250 bucks a board with any upgrade path is 100 + 1540 for a nice x97

now if you don't mind a m-atx the asrock z97-m overclock is on sale and its a full featured board with sli support

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157520

if not ever looking to do a sli there some good ''H'' boards but may only do AMD X- fire only at best ??

I was looking these threads over

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/all.html?refine=FX8350+Freezes+

just hard to say and what you expect you want to do for me I cant see less then a full z board and at least a top i5 for myself [I'm on a z87 and a 4670 now ] and it was for the chip and board right at $350 ...

for a first time build maybe this chip ??

but still to find a chip and boards bios that will match up with out needing to flash it first that chip needs bios 1.40 to work on that z97m overcklock ?

you never know what bios is going to ship I all ways go with something that works wit all bios's from first release to be safe

this chip will work right out of the box under all bios

and good solid memory [on the boards list [I use it ]
