AMD or Intel budget CPU for gaming?

With my budget I have gotten down to either getting an AMD FX-8320 or an Intel i3-4360. I've checked online reviews and benchmarks for both CPUs, so finally I'd like to know which one you guys think is the better choice.

He doesn't need noctua cpu cooler. Hyper 212evo will be more than enough for a decent overclock and for a decent price; it costs about $20. Like I said i7 > i5 > FX 8350 (overclocked) > i3 > other AMD processors
Do you plan to overclock? If you are, then get an i5 4460 & B85M E45 motherboard, cheaper, faster, cooler. Between the FX & i3, I would go with the i3.

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($139.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($74.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($102.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $317.86

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($176.95 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI B85M-E45 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($62.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $239.94

Isn't 8350 almost the same price wise as 8320 ? If so get 8350 instead and good mobo to overclock it. If you want to go for i3 4170 or 4360 whichever is cheaper.

To conclude i7>i5>8350 > i3 > 8320 > other AMD processors

The i5 4460 isn't unlocked so I don't see how I could overclock without raising the base clock, whereas FX series CPUs are all unlocked. As for cooler I was more inclined to get a CoolerMaster Hyper T4.

Why would you include a third party cooler on one CPU and not the other and then say thats its cheaper? Both the 8320 and the 8350 handle games really well without an overclock and their stock coolers can handle a decent overclock as well. An i5 is better but only by 5-10fps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20QPpIqo-YY depending on the game of course.

Because for a decent overclock on FX processors you need 3rd party cooler so you can get better overclock, otherwise there's no point in buying them if you won't use them to their potential. Stock cooler is perfectly fine for i5 because you can't overclock it since it's not K version (it's not unlocked)

Because I asked if OP wanted to overclock. If you're not overclocking the FX, the performancegap between the i5 and the FX is worse.

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($76.80 @ Amazon)
Total: $216.79

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($176.95 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI B85M-E45 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($62.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $239.94

Keep in mind that you might want to invest in a 212 EVO because the FX stock cooler is the loudest one I ever heard. With that added, I would go for the i5, it's just better. The FX cannot be compared to an i3...

It's better only in those games that are using more than 2 cores, and there are not many games out there that are using more than 2 atm. One I can think of is Battlefield 4.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNt_KS0UUhI Here's the comparisson.

i3 is better than 8320(stock speed) in most games, almost all of them.

Thank you for your answers everyone. After consideration I think I'll get an FX 8350 (with a CM Hyper T4) since the price gap isn't too big between that and the 8320. Chose the 8350 because I play some CPU-intensive games (which use more than 2 cores) and being an unlocked processor it gives me the option to overclock rather than upgrade in the future. In any event it will be a huge improvement from my i5 760.
