How do I "split" a new incoming broadband ethernet cat 6 from fibre optic to my home?

In a couple weeks Metronet is coming to install fiber optic service to my house from the new lines in our neighborhood. They run a fiber optic cable to the house and install some type of converter on the side of the house. They then run a new cat 6 line to ONE location in my home. Im OK with that part but how do I get it to other outlets in my home? I want to use cat 6 cable in a few other wall outlets and my headache is how to share the incoming Ethernet? I know a splitter only uses 4 wires for each side so I don't want that. Do I use a switch? A router? I already have a router for my desktop and wifi but I DONT want to necessarily network all outlets together. Id like to keep my computer separated from the other lines. With Coax cable its easy to just use splitters but that wont work here. Plus my home has old telephone wire (4 wire solid colors)
IS a patch panel what I need? Does a patch panel share a incoming port with all the others or is it a just a pass thru for each punchdown to the plug assigned? How do I plug in the main incoming cat 6 cable and tap off of it with other cat 6 cables to my primary TV/entertainment center and other cat 6 to bedrooms for stand alone access to the incoming broadband without going thru my desktop network?

You would connect a ROUTER to the incoming ethernet connection. You would use the LAN ports on the router (which would usually provide WIFI also) to connect to other locations in your home. If you want more than 4 local connections (plus WIFI) then you would use a switch to connect all the home ports together and then a single ethernet to the router to connect to the internet.
