I have an asus m3n78-VM, I am currently looking for really any processor right around 2.6ghz with an L3 cache and high MT/s.. So far I have saw lots of options in am3 CPUS. I think I've read or heard from a friend you can actually put a am3 on a am2/2+ MOBO, and still use the 1066 DDR 2 to get the most out of an old board. Is this true?

as long as you can flash with your old supported chip to the bios that supports the new chip you want to use its still all good

just be sure you got the corresponding bios for the chip you want to use from the list

so if your now running bios 3 and that new chip needs bios 7 flash the bios to 7 or higher and then install the new chip

if you gopt to do a bios update just use the latest one and your covered

I think I can go with the phenom II x4 810. 2.6ghz which is the highest my MOBO can go so I imagine that since it's the only one with nothing next to it, that it means it would work? Sorry I'm such a noob..

Does it not matter if I excede the bandwidth of the mobo.. It says it only goes up to 2.6ghz.. If you can just excede that with drivers now I'm amazed at how dumbly I've been doing things..

You can run Phenom 945's-965's $50-$75
Phenom IIX6 1035T,1055T $75+
Athlons 240's-260's $9-$20
or a Phenom II B50 and B55 $17-$20

For a Am2+ board that is one of the nice ones, I would grab a Phenom II B55 for $18, update your Bios then run the Nvidia Core Calibration and attempt to unlock the CPU into a Quad or "triple Core". I bought 4 all unlocked to a Quad and took between a 3.4ghz to 3.7ghz overclock on a similar specced boards.

I am going with the AMD Phenom II X4 965 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SRQ214/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ASSJQNF497RLX

Now as for ram goes. I'm looking at a brand called Komputerbay but they are one of the few people with 4 sticks of 2gb. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Komputerbay-DDR2-1066Mhz-K9N2G-Neo-FD/dp/B0032CL5KW/ref=sr_1_48?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1441741394&sr=1-48&keywords=2g+DDR2+1066

well your board sup[ports up to 8gb as long as your using 64 bit os use it - on 32 bit os anything over 4gb is a waste anyway

''***When installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows® 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Hence, a total installed memory of less than 3GB is recommended. ''

I guess that means you have no experience with AM2+/AM3 CPU's? Here I will explain something to you that your not going to get from just reading a list, it comes from actually using the hardware. A good deal of Athlons, Semprons and Phenoms are unlockable to something else you just have to know what they are, I have a nice long list saved should you want to look.

B Series are Business Class Phenoms crippled to a Dual Core and most will unlock perfectly fine, some are rejects but the majority are not. Phenom II X2 555 and B55 are coded the same just not labeled, any Bios that supports a X2 555 will take a B series. If you unlock a Phenom II X2 555 it will show as a B55 X4.

OP I will warn you on the RAM avoid using difference brands and try to keep it Crucial, GSkill, Kingston, Kingsmax, Geil, Qimonda, Samsung. Nothing is more frustrating that having the computer pick or not pick up your RAM every time you turn the thing on. DDR2 1066mhz is pretty expensive in 2GB sticks Look on Ebay or Classifieds to find a reasonable price. $75+ for a CPU and $75+ for RAM for a PC this old doesn't seem like a good investment.

if you say so ? then there should be no problems with them being on the cpu list ?? if there was no difference then why would they need to call one a ''B'' ??

I see from places like here how they are the same [ not]

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Phenom-II-X2-B55-vs-AMD-Phenom-II-X2-555

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/276735-phenom-ii-x2-555-or-phenom-ii-x4-b55/

I don't see any need for that when he can get what he choose off the ''supported'' cpu list of his board

and true all ways buy your memory in full factory matched and guaranteed kits

AMD has for 20 years tweaked surplus to fit gaps, just because something Reads as X doesn't mean it is and if you know how to look and unlock then you would understand. A 555 BE and B55 are indeed the same CPU from the Same BIN but batched for different uses, both will unlock to the Same Quad a X4 B55. There are literally 40 different AM2/AM2+/AM3 CPU's that are unlockable with at least a 50% chance of success. You are apparently good at using Google, it shouldn't take you any more than 15 seconds to find the info to back this up, CPUBoss will not have anything on Unlockables they only supply what AMD released on the Retail and OEM lists. AMD has never openly came out and discussed this practice nor will they every admit to it but you have the ability to Unlock for a reason.
