Have i destroyed my motherboard by overtightening cpu cooler standoffs?

So i have just finished building my second gaming pc. During the build i had to install standoffs to the motherboard supplied with my hyper 212 evo cpu cooler. I didn't want them to be loose but i didnt wrench them up either however when i looked at them afterwards i could see what appeared to be a ring of squashed white material around the standoffs, like the pcb material had been dug into. It looked bad but i told myself it must just be a rubber washer or something and continued with my build, now its done and it will not post, the fans spin for a fraction of a second then nothing. I know there are many reasons why this could be but is it even worth me investigating considering that i have probably torn into my motherboards circuitry with 4 metal bolts? Shall i just bite the bullet and buy another motherboard and start over?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
-----Edit-----
Upon further investigation it appears that it was indeed some sort of built in plastic washer on the standoffs, still doesnt explain why my pc wont boot but at least i havent crushed my mobo. So any ideas on why it wont post? As i said the fans soin for half a second then its straight off. All mobo power is connected. Psu is making a funny ringing noise though.

Also, the fact that you did this from the start means it could be something else all together not causing it to post. I assume you didn't boot it first with the stock heatsink and have it boot and now it doesn't, but you went new parts->evo->no boot.
