How is the 970 still tied with the 390?

I was wondering how Nvidia's gtx 970 still can compare to the radeon 390, with the 390 edging out the 970. I like nvidia but the 390s specs just seem better:

go to the top middle of the page and look at the specs and the 390 seems to have the 970 pretty much beat out. Can the 970 still compete with it?

They are withing a few % of eachother at 1080p, with the R9 trialing by a few % behind the reference 970.
However, the 970 OCs far better than the 390, so 970, in general, at 1080p and below is still better.

From what I've gathered, the 970 wins @ 1080 and the 390 wins @1440. this could be because of 8Gb of HBM in the 390

The 970 can overclock exceptionally well, which for me i like alot more than the 390.

Mine also runs extremely cool no matter what i throw at it, and its overclocked pretty heavily (see signature)

they are very good cards to be honest i am running my overclocked all high on crysis 3 ultra msa x8 and lowest i get is 45 which is dam good still

I'm judging from answers and other threads that the 970 over clocks better than the 390 right? Would a fairly high overclock on the 970 have better performance than a fairly high overclock on a 390?

If you are comparing 1080p then yes the 970 would perform better hands down, as the 390 has very little OC headroom.
At higher resolutions however the 970 begins to fall into the 390s wake.

So do you think getting a 970 for 1080p right now and then getting another for sli + 1440p monitor in a few years is a good plan?

I would get a 970 now for 1080p, and in a few years consider your options again.
There will likely be a new card that performs better at 1440p

if a lot of games with DX12 design can handle vram stacking in the near future then the 2x 970 may be a better option. if not, then the ~3.5GB vram will be a bad limiting factor.
