Hi guys I have just bought a desktop pc to use off ebay "Lenovo ThinkCentre M5536 i5 3.05Ghz, 4GB, 500GB, Win7 - Refurbished" ebay ID: 301722581567

I believe its is an i5 650, and maybe a socket 1156, its hard to find exact specs until it arrives.

I wanted to know, are these specs okay by today's standards, or will the machine be slow?
Does the 1156 socket support SSD's and or will it be beneficial?
Would it be worth attempting to install windows 10 on it, or should I stick to 7?

Solution
depends on what you will use the computer for. a core i5@3.0GHZ is powerfull enough to run anything but 4GB of ram is small by today's standards so may be worth an upgrade since RAM is cheap. as long as the copy of windows 7 is genuine (you never know with refurbs) and fully updated via windows update you will be able to get the free windows 10 upgrade but the computer is pretty old so not sure if it is fully compatible

Needed for reliable web surfing and emails and word. Upgrading from an EMachines ER1401 amd neo II K325 as that was very laggy. This new computer cost me $120~ / £80, debating whether going from 4gb to 8gb vs 500gb to 120gb ssd.

1156 is 5 years old technology, I'd say that's about mid-life. For surfing should be OK, not as smooth as more recents but hey at $120, what can you get these days?

A SSD will give that mid-life dude a modern hair cut, but you are most likely limited by SATAII speed, unless you wanna go the PCIe/M.2 route which is probably gonna cost more than the computer itself.

Whether going to W10 is up to you, you have 1 year to do so, I say no hurry.

Just to make an update after a year.

Its been absolutely fantastic running windows 7. It performs all tasks (word excel emails outlook) without any hesitation. Its well optimised and has provided me trouble free computing.
