Is Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink too big for an ASRock Anniv H97 motherboard?

I wanted to buy a "decent" fan for my new ASRock H97 Anniversary motherboard so I picked the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink and pcpartspicker said it was compatible. I didn't realise how big it was and was a bit shocked when I opened the package. Is it overkill for this motherboard? Should I return it and get something else?

Hio charles_i, I've used 212 Evo's in many builds before and never head a problem with them. Most 4 heatpipe heatsinks look huge in comparison to stock coolers but rest assured, that's a good cooling unit. The size is just so the heatsink has enough room to spread heat from the pipes before it's exhausted off.

Thanks JimmoR3M good to know it's a solid unit.

Not sure what this means: "can be a problem if your memory have radiators..." I'm going to use Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory - but I don't know where "radiators" are.

He's saying that sometimes there is a bit of a squeeze when your RAM sticks have big heatsinks on them, like the Corsair Vengence stuff. It's not too much of a problem really as most of the time the cooler clears them well enough and a lot of builds I've seen have Low Profile RAM anyway. From the looks of your RAM I'd say you have enough clearance for this to not be an issue. The alternative is to turn the cooler to face a top exhaust fan but that's pretty extreme.

Edit: Oh, and I've just realised you said you only use 1 stick of RAM, that's okay because you can just move the RAM to the farthest slot from the CPU cooler anyway.

For air cooling, bigger is better.
Larger fans run slower and cool better with less noise.
So long as your case will allow a 160mm tall air cooler, go ahead and use the hyper212.
It is a very good cooler for the price.
----------keep it------------

What cpu are you trying to cool?

Tall ram heat spreaders can be a problem with some coolers.
In your case, you are good. The hyperx heat spreaders are of a nominal height.
Past that, there are options such as installing the ram in a more distant slot, or installing the fan on the other side of the cooling fins.

Cryorig H7 , better than the 212.

Unmatched Compatibility
Zero RAM Interference

Focusing on providing the widest range of
compatibility, the H7 utilizes an asymmetric slanted
heatpipe layout to move the heatsink away from the
RAM zone, Offering optimal compatibility for RAM
with tall heat spreaders on both Intel 115X and
AMD platforms.

As a followup, the fan fit without a problem. There are two sets of screws that secure the backing plate (that the bracket that holds the fan screw into on the top). I ended up using the slightly taller set and the fan overhangs the first RAM slot and just clears the top of the RAM stick. The fan also just fits the case.

For some reason the instructions say to put both sets of these screws together which would add more height. Maybe that's to clear the RAM slot but I'm not sure if the fan would fit the case if I had done that. The RAM could be replaced by just removing the fan.

I'm not sure what the top and bottom plastic rails are for that attach to the front of the fan. They look cosmetic to me. The installation tutorial I watched on youtube didn't use them so I didn't either. The bottom one would hang over the first and second RAM slots. I can't see any useful purpose for them.

Thanks for your help.
