Motherboard, graphics card, and power supply all failed simultaneously. What could cause this?

I'll try to keep this a succinct as possible. I ordered my first custom PC from cyberpowerpc on 2/2013, so it's a little over two years old now. It has been running well, apart from some minor issues (power button dislodging from case, headset and mouse included were junky). Nothing worth crying over until two weeks ago, when I woke up to find my computer wouldn't start. No fans, no lights, nothing. I did some searching online and found a method of using a paper clip to test the power supply, and concluded it was the issue, so I ordered a brand new EVGA supernova 750 G2. First I used the PSU tester that came with the new power supply to test the old one, and it did turn on (fans whirring) so I connected everything to the old PSU and still no go. So I disconnected everything and systematically starts reconnecting until I reached a point that the MB and other components would start as long as the graphics card was not installed and connected to power. I thought maybe this meant the power supply was insufficient after all, and decided to try the new one. I installed it, connected components one by one, and managed to get everything to start up, even with the graphics card. So I closed up the case and returned the computer to its usual spot, plugged in all the peripherals, and then...no starting. I checked to make sure it wasn't the surge protector or the outlet, and then started from the bottom again connecting components one by one, but this time I could only get the power supply fan to turn on with the tester; nothing else worked. At spoke to cyberpowerpc tech support, whose only advice was to have the graphics card tested at best buy. So I decided time for some professionals and took my computer to a reputable repair shop nearby.

Today I have learned that they have diagnosed that the MB, graphics card AND new power supply are not functioning. I'm at a loss as to how this all happened, or even what could have been the original problem. The techs mentioned that the power supply could have blown when it was hooked to the bad Mb, but weren't sure why their own power supply didn't blow as well. I trust they are being honest with me, but I'm still left with a lot of questions. If anyone has any insight or suggestions on how this could have happened and whether it is worth replacing these parts or simply going for a new computer (current HD is Ok), I would greatly appreciate it. Well, that's a bummer. Wish I could go back in time and warn myself I would be flushing $1600 down the drain if I didn't upgrade the PSU. would you agree that the new PSU failed because it was connected to the blown MB?
