Sandy Bridge i5 or Haswell i3 for gaming?

Hey everyone!

I am looking into buying either a used i5 2400 or an i3 4160. I feel as though common sense would say to go for the i5 but CPU World says the i3 would be better in single threaded performance which for now, are what most games use.

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/410/Intel_Core_i3_i3-4160_vs_Intel_Core_i5_i5-2400.html

I am aware that a lot of games are coming out multi threaded but as far as current games and some a little older, would you recommend the i3 or the i5?

Do you agree with CPU World that the i3 is better?

Thank you sammy sung for the useful info. I should have checked Anandtech.

Unfortunately I do not have any good local tech store.

Tea urchin, I don't know why I didn't think of just looking for a used i3. I searched for one just now and I honestly couldn't find a used one that was significantly cheaper than a new one.

I am not sure which one to go for still. I am sort of leaning on the i3 though.

That makes sense cause when I searched I found that people sell used i3s for only about $10 to $20 dollars less than new.

You have convinced me to go with the i3. I could not agree more. For the price it is too good of a processor to pass up, especially against anything else around its price. It beats most AMD processors in single threaded performance which is one of the main reasons I did not want to go with AMD. With the i3 at least I have a clear upgrade path to the i5, like you said. With AMD I am there is no upgradability.

Thanks for the help everyone! Your advice helped me quit a bit!
