Sound Tray icon doesn't work

The tray icon for sound has stopped working. It still shows if my sound is muted or not and when i click on it the area around it darkens but nothing happens. Right clicking also produces no result. Probably would fix with a restart but I have lots of stuff open at the moment and aren't really keen to have to close and reopen everything. Sony VAIO, Windows 8.1,
