Frequent computer hangs - is my hard drive failing?

Hey all. I've been experiencing frequent computer hangs.

It started two days ago - I was browsing the internet & listening to music when all of a sudden, my video & browser froze but my mouse could still move. After about 5 seconds, my mouse turned into the loading wheel.

I left it for another 20 seconds and a windows error popped up with the button "End Process", I tried to click on it but nothing happened. I couldn't switch into any other windows than the one I'm on because then my taskbar froze. Pressing the power off button on my computer gets no reaction so I have to hold it down for a hard reset.

It happens randomly. When I tried to turn it on again, it turned on for a second and then shut down immediately, then happened again in a loop until I turned off the power supply. The boot loop has stopped for now but I’m still getting freezes. If it points to anything, just before it froze, when I clicked on a webpage it said “Waiting for cache” on Google Chrome. When it froze when I was playing Counter Strike, the game started to lag.

I've reseated my RAM and unplugged my storage drive to see if that was the problem. My specs are below.

Operating System
Windows 8.1 N 64-bit

CPU
Intel Core i5 4690K @ 3.50GHz 31 °C

RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 800MHz (11-11-11-28)

Motherboard
MSI Z97 GAMING 3 (MS-7918) (SOCKET 0) 29 °C

Graphics
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (EVGA) 62 °C

Storage 119GB M4-CT128M4SSD2 (SSD) 1TB
Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Hi there dcently,

So you have your OS installed on your SSD or HDD?

As you suspect your HDD, you can just test it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
In case there is something wrong with it, you need to back up the data stored on it.

Apart from that, you can try several other things:
- Try to boot up into safe mode. In case the issue persists, then most probably you are facing a hardware related problem.
- Observe Resource Monitor and see whether there is high usage of something(RAM, DISK, etc.) during the freezes.
- In case you have more than one RAM stick, try using only one at a time(take the other out). You can change slots as well. There are some RAM testing tools too.
- As you have...

- As you have integrated graphics, it will not hurt to take your GPU out.

Hi!

I have my OS installed on my SSD. I installed CrystalDiskInfo and checked my SSD and it was giving 96% Good. I can't check my storage drive because I unplugged it to see if the issue still persists.

I'll give the other things ago in a little, thanks for your help. :)
