I created a bootable Windows 7 USB using the provided utility at http://wudt.codeplex.com/, but despite a success message and BIOS recognizing it, nothing happens when I set it to boot from the USB. Literally nothing. No error message, just a black screen with a flashing underscore in the top left.

I know this copy of Windows works, because I installed it on this computer previously, but had some issues while re-partitioning for an attempted Ubuntu dual boot. After much consternation, I decided to try and do another clean install, but the original boot drive I created no longer registered as bootable for some reason. Thus began this circle of frustration.

Many thanks in advance.

Well, the issue here isn't the key - it's still in the files somewhere. The key would just return an invalid copy of windows every time you boot and leave a permanent reminder on the bottom right of the screen, rendering your desktop solid black. Not to mention the popups that rip you out of your game and leave you dead at the hands of a dragon while playing Skyrim.... Which goes windowed mode when pulled to the desktop.....

Edit - Realized my first answer was incorrect. Will update when a new answer beyond file integrity occurs. Such as maybe the ability to boot from USB..... The bios has to be set to boot from USB - you might have done that though. Hm.

Booting from USB has a host of problems with it that go beyond that of an HDD. Creating a bootable file structure isn't as simple as it is on an HDD or SSD - as it seems you've learned. I must ask - are you attempting to make a portable Win 7 copy, or a USB installer?
