Ok so I have a dell optiplex 760 tower with 4gb ram 3.0 ghz processor 6mb cache and I would like to get a dedicated video card for it. Any recomendations?

Solution

@clutchc: I actually created this post about 2 years ago, when MSI HD 7750 was just began production, so as owner I am using this for any applicable products, good observation.

@VeNoM921: Unfortunately for me, clutchc is absolutely correct, I can say with 99% certainty that I can help with upgrades of any Optiplex model out there, piece of cake, just time consuming. Other Dell models are easier to upgrade....
The easier way is to use this picture

So, if OP has Mini Tower, power supply is 305 watt, it doesn't have supplemental GPU power connectors, but can be upgraded using any standard ATX power supplies, however the issue with any Optiplex 760 is in the motherboard format - BTX, the following will explain BTX in simple detail in relation to video card upgrade.

THIS POST APPLICABLE TO MT (MINI TOWER) FORM FACTOR ONLY.

Unfortunately no card that is more than 7.5 inches long or 2 slots wide will PHYSICALLY FIT inside the case - it was found that only single bracket video card can fit due to BTX MOBO, where card internals facing upward towards PC internals, not ATX, where dual card design is blocking another PCI slot by facing downward.
If you prefer the card with beefier fan, then the length of the card must not exceed 7.5 inches, otherwise only "skinny" single bracket, single slot cards can physically fit.

Pictures below will prove my point.

View shows no room for dual bracket

Single bracket only, or you have to cut dual bracket in half

This is the other way to show my point

Here you can clearly see only single place for the bracket

7.5 inches explained, also shown "obstacles"

This is the picture of actual "skinny" single slot video card (not sure which model)- perfect, "glove" fit.

So, choices for video cards are limited.

Next problem is that Dell used 2 different motherboards in this model, one which support QUAD processors and the other - only for Core 2 DUO or weaker.

Going further will creates a lot of IFs, so we need OP to show up here. If OP PC has only Core2Duo, strongest GPU will bottleneck CPU big time and produce a lot of visual artifacts, and vise verse, if we recommend weaker GPU for motherboard which can be upgraded to QUAD, well you got the idea....
