What should I upgrade? ( Computer not running great. Maybe bottlenecking? )

( I think I posted this in the wrong section, sorry >.< )

Hey all, I wanna start this off by saying I am quite awful when it comes to hardware. All of it goes over my head and I get confused rather easily. I use my computer mostly for gaming, MMO's typically, as well as some single player stuff. I would basically like to run everything maxed out at 60 FPS.

I have a 1440p IPS monitor, if that matters at all. ( Ghosting isn't an issue or anything like that, im just getting low frame-rates in a lot of games, I dont know if something in my computer is bottle-necking, or what. I'm hoping somebody can tell me if it is or not based on my specs. )

The Specs are as follows! ( I don't understand overclocking, so assume nothing is )

OS: Windows 7
CPU: Fx 8350 8-core 4.0 GHz, 16mb Total Cache
GPU: Nvidia GTX 680 2Gb Ram ( Cpu-z says Core is 1084 MHz, Memory 3004 MHz under clocks, I have no idea what this means but it may be relevant :p )
Ram: 8Gb DDR3
Motherboard: ASRock 970 Extreme4

I have no idea how to check what type of hard-drive I have, or if that is even relevant to frame rate and stuttering / games freezing up a lot.

Apologies if I have missed anything. Can anyone let me know what sort of upgrade I should be looking for? Suggestions are welcome. I'd prefer if any suggestions were future-proof for a decent length of time, without being -insanely- expensive. I don't really have a specific budget in mind but I wouldn't want to be paying for like the absolute top tier.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to help :)

If you are playing MMO's like LoL or WOW if your playing Destiny or something like that sorts ie H1Z1 or DayZ get a GTX 970 or 980. 980 will really get you those frames tho.

Old hardware.

Original Poster: You would be better off with a 970 for 1440p with 60fps. I prefer EVGA but any of the players will get you a notable increase in performance for roughly $300-330 USD.

Yes he would. The 970 can provide 1440p gaming @ Mid to high settings at 60fps no problem.
For gosh sakes you recommended a 750... That wouldn't even touch 1440p at low settings with 35fps. lol. Plus its old hardware. Moving forward, that card will have a harder time with new games especially with DX12 coming up soon.

OP. What kind of budget are you working with?

If you can stretch for it, the 980ti would be great addition for 1440p at ultra settings with 120fps.
But your really best off with a 970 for 60fps at 1440p with mid to high settings.

I recommended a 750 for League of Legends or World of Warcraft however I did recommend a 970 or a 980 for games of higher demands

Thanks for the replies all. Just to reiterate, 60 FPS 1440p is my aim for things on ultra settings - I'm on an IPS monitor so I don't need to be hitting ridiculously high frame rate. =)

As for budget £300 - £350 is probably as high as I could go. =(

Then your best option is the 970. This will accomplish your needs without spending to much.
Best 970 options imo:
EVGA 970 FTW
ASUS 970 OC
GIGABYTE 970 G1
