New Sony 4K projector works normally at 1900x with my 290x, but the entire pc lags when I activate a 4k resolution. This is a 4k projector, shouldn't have issue with basic pc functions at that res like typing and such. Video playback has a low frame rate, but is fixed with 30hz active instead of 60hz default. Thing is 30hz looks horrid and blurry and such.

Not sure why this is happening.

Hmm you're out of luck there, the 290x doesn't have HDMI2, none of the new AMD cards either as they're sticking with DisplayPort only as means for 4k.

GTX960/970/980/TitanX are the only GPUs with HDMI2 for 4k @ 60Hz unfortunately if you favor AMD.

But this doesn't explain exactly your choppiness problem but certainly is regarding 30Hz limitation.

Ah man, really!? Dammit amd. That really upsets me if that is the case.

30hz works normal. Everything chops up at 60hz. Sony told me to purchase a 2.0 hdmi cable, did so and it did not solve the problem, although now I see that the nvidia cards have 2.0 capability and the amds do not. Son of a bitch. Sony just told me that I need a 2.2 hdmi cable, not a 2.0. Apparently 2.2 will work with 60hz, and ill still have to buy an nvidia gpu.

Gotta love modern tech. Sony has a dedicated department for this projector and product support for it, nobody there actually has one to test anything and they are all foreign, reading off manuals. Gave them a call, naturally they are all heavy accent indian reps. Can't understand them, nobody knows how to fix it. Heh. Super happy I know the amd cards dont work with it, so lets hope thats the link in the chain causing the issue. If I swap my 290x for a 970 and the problem continues, you'll hear me screaming overseas.

Lol i do wish you well with it. But yea, HDMI2 allows for 4k @ 60hz. HDMI 1.4a can do 4k but at 30Hz which is the version AMD has if they use HDMI as an interface. People are really upset with the latest AMD Fury cards not providing HDMI2 because of exactly for what you're doing and also 4k TVs.

:[ I guess I'll report back in the distant future if I am ever able to swap my 290x for a 970 and see first hand if everything functions normally. Thanks for everyones help so far.

Its early days, Fury hasn't be out long. Maybe AMD from consumer pressure might bring out a refresh with HDMI2.

Regarding HDMI cables, there is only one HDMI v2 standard for bandwidth, the other confusing part is HDCP v2.2 which whom at Sony you spoke to thought might have been the problem regarding copy right protection. HDCP v2.2 is the new version and is done at hardware level inside the device, be it TV or GPU, nothing to do with the cable version which remains HDMI 2 high bandwidth for 4k.

Very confusing, i have hard time understanding the complications with current TVs etc that aren't HDCP 2.2 ready. Theres talk of firmware updates but for you, not sure if updating your projector's firmware is possible. Maybe ask Sony? But let them know of R9 290x HDMI version as 1.4.
