Getting the right GPU for my Monitor

I'm getting ready replace my aging 4 year old system in about 2 months. I've decided on getting a 2560x1080 monitor and need advice on whats a good graphics card to go with it. My budget is $300-$400.

I know vram is important with higher resolutions so I was looking at the R9 390 with its 8gigs but wasn't sure if it would keep up with games in the next 3 years which is usually how far ahead I like to plan my builds.

Then I started looking at the 980 since it beats the 390 in performance but that price tag is just a bit too much for my wallet, but if games like star citizen require for high settings 60fps then so be it(paying bills is for chumps anyway).

Any suggestions.

2560x1440 / 2560x1600 is essentially 2k (or QHD), 2560x1080 is often called WFHD and 3440x1440 is WQHD

4k is 3840x2160

to be true 2560x1080 isn't that much demanding, nothing close to 4k and not even sure where 4k came from. The added Vram is handy on the R9 390 but it wont be much of use at the chosen resolution, and when it will be needed the core will be struggling before it can even be utilized effectively. The 8GB Vram is only beneficial to crossfire setups, when Vram is scaled and physical GPU power is combined. That said for the time period you are waiting until the next upgrade, I would get the R9 390 over the GTX 970 due to it's edging raw performance, however if the GTX 980 is within grasp it is another power-efficient...

In this res for high fps and good settings you need the 980. You might see vids where people can run games at 4K but you dont know in what settings..

If you can put your hand deeper in your pocket go for the 980 or the 970. I wouldnt go for the 390 for a lots of reasons even in 4K 3,5gb are Ok

I'm not an expert but wouldn't this resolution be considered 2k? It has much less pixels to work than 1440p.
