I have a weird problem. I have an older machine. I bought it in 2008. It has an MSI motherboard with usb2.0. It has an intel 5200 dual proc chip 2.5 ghz. with 4gb of ram. I can use a thumbdrive on the USB port and it works fine. I have a wireless chip for k/b and mouse that i boot up with. However when i hook up an external drive to do backup it never sees the drive. The bios is the latest. Any ideas. Been this way since i bought it.

what OS is on that old machine ? and what is the capacity of the external harddisk ?

The only thing I could think of would be a BIOS setting. For example, it's possible that port is turned off or set to use USB 1.0 or something like that... that could explain why stuff like a keyboard and mouse and USB drive works but not an external drive.

The only other explanation would be a loose cable on the motherboard for that USB Port.

You should also check to see if the USB External drive that's not working.... see if it works on another computer or another USB port.. if not, then it could mean that drive itself is faulty.

I have many spare drives nothing works. Other than that unit works great. I checked setting in bios even defaulted to factory and optimum. I am lost. Tried every usb port on machine no luck. Just wondering if anyone else ever had this problem.
