So I own a custom built computer with windows 7 professional. The built in back up system doesn't work due to an error with the Volume shadow not working. So I'm wondering what would be the best alternative. Particularly for someone who works with large video, Maya and other multimedia files that are constantly changing.

If you want to backup the entire system hard drive, use disk-imaging software. You'll need a separate hard drive to save the disk image to. In fact you'll need two separate hard drives so you can save two independent copies of the image. I save mine to four external hard drives - - overkill perhaps but I can afford to do it so it gives me peace of mind.

I use this software, bulletproof, reliable & easy to use: http://www.disk-image.net/?ti=2AF9E6E4851D237C400001512002B5501442041301639
