Hi

So just today I ran into a problem with my previously running pc.

When I turn on my pc, it runs for 5 seconds and restarts again and stays running. BUT I dont get any signal to my monyitor when I plug the hdmi cable from gpu to mobo either. i also dont have my mouse or keyboard lighting up.

Now, I briefly googled a the symptom and apparently my psu could be kicking the bucket. So I grabbed my multimeter and went to testing it.

My Psu is a Cougar CMX 700w which is 80+ bronze rated. It has been reliable for more than 3, years.

So after watching two youtube videos im sure im measuring correctly, ive tested the 12v of a molex, and the 12v of my motherboard connection and it reads 19.xx Volts !!

Is my psu broken or what? Im not sure, so any help and troubleshooting ideas are appreciated!

Thanks

EDIT: changed the swear ?? and Im adding a picture of my multimeter connected directly to the 12v2 of my modular power supply

1. Don't swear :)

2. Yup, it seems as though your PSU is over volting quite badly. Hopefully no components were damaged

3. Just one last thing, I don't think you are testing properly with the meter because a Molex connector is only 3v or 5v (can't remember - brain fart) and is most certainly not the 12v rail.

So another update, and question. It seems the reading I get depends on which ground hole the black prong is held in. When I test the 24pin mobo's yellow , it shows 12v only when i use the ground beside the yellow wire, none other than that.
But that doesnt explain receiving 20v directly from my psu's 12v1, 12v2, or a yellow and black wire of a molex plug.

Id hate to have to cut all of my zipties and buy another psu

Well, if I understand what you are saying, you are asking if the problem could be something other than your PSU?

If you can get a signal to your monitor and get your Keyboard and mouse working there might be some other things to try.

If not ^ and given the bad voltages you've taken I'd say the PSU may have taken some things out with it.

Thank you very much for your assistance dom

So my computer finally booted up and is running fine again. Either my psu stopped having its anuerism, or reseating my gpu and the power connectors throughout my pc did the trick! Im leaning towards the latter :)

You're welcome for the help :)

If you hadn't changed anything or done anything (hardware wise) before this issue popped up I still suggest a new PSU when you can. The initial problem is one I've had before with a dying PSU and it will only come back.

Also, I googl'ed your PSU and guess what? I found an older Tom's thread about it... not good as they point out the exact problem you were having (Voltage regulation getting out of bounds)

I'd say replace that PSU ASAP - By that I mean "as soon as possible", not "Oh my God, get it out now and Burn it with Fire!!!" ;)
