Many cases you can undervolt but keep the same speed so less heat and a little more performance. There is no affect on life to be concerned with. There's more heat since it's on auto and that will overvolt most of the time. You should try to manually set it.

If you have a Maximus Hero just enter the BIOS and use the overclocking feature. Without any manual tweaking you'll get 4.6Ghz on an OC. Don't worry about the stock features or if they fluctuate. The built in boost will change dending on load/temp.

i just always had mine set at 0 44 1 44 2 43 3 42 and the turbo decide when t wanted to them to all go to 44.when they are all on 44 and have the samsung power mode on they stick at 44 all the time [so whats the turbo for?] plus the extra heat i idle at 26 and fold and prime 95 at 60 to 65c.i am using h100i gtxbut have to put fans on the boards cpu or i get an alert saying fan failier.is there a way to turn that off so i can plug the fans into the corsair gtx pump/cpu cover?

i like the timings you have said.it alows for low heat and at stress goes to 4.2 then up to 4.4 when gaming.so i will leave it at what i think is the best way.its just varied from so many mobos and intels oc utility doesnt seem to be able to make its mind up either.i can oc to 4.6 but whats the point you wont notice any performance increace in games [maybye a frame or 2] but the extra heat and life of the chip? i like idling at 26c [ambient heat im sitting with shorts and t shirt with all windows open and its not cold lol]
