dvi dual link/display port 144hz. help pls

Hey guys so I bought a 144hz monitor off of a friend, and he told me to get a dvi dual link cable to run it at 120hz or 144hz. so i got a DVI-D male to DVI-D male dual link Cable cause thats all i could find, but when i plug it in, it keeps saying that im not using a dvi dual link. is there such a thing as dual link dvi on both connectors, or should i just get a display port?

I personally would just opt for display port, much newer and designed for high res/high refresh rates in the first place.

But, since you have a dual link dvi cable (not an adapter right?) it should work.

I7 3770, evga geforce gtx 980 sc acx 2.0. asus VG248QE 144hz 1080p display.

and in an additional note, I bought a display port cable, and the panel gives me a no signal error. the gpu is fine cause i use a display port to hdmi and i tried it on all outputs.
