Im thinking about buying a Skylake CPU to replace my old Phenom II X4 955, but with DX12 around the corner Im unsure of what to do. I have heard from some sites that DX12 favors more cores over single threaded performance (running the Ashes of Singularity DX12 benchmark), which means that AMD is going to benefit from this.

The question is though... how many cores can it benefit from until there are no more performance gains. Does DX12 benefit from Hyper-threading? Can DX12 use 6+ cores? When does Zen get released?

All these questions, yet no good answers. Does anyone here know alot about DX12?

i know my answear comes a litlle bit late , but bot ways u have to switch the platform to am4 or 1151 (z170 since its a 6600k or 6700k maybe you desire some overclock). Even if i am and AMD fan , intel is already at hand you already have the benchmarks to prove its quality , while the zen thingy with its 40% IPC gain is still only on paper (hopefully its more since intel will have its 7xxx series out most likely when zen appears ). Waiting for am4 is not really a choice since intel 2600k is still used and its gonna have a llifespam of 5 years as top of the chain like the 6700k (which is gonna be solid till 2020) , and TBO current amd solutions are indeed cheap but not really a solution since you would have to buy a platform for a 83xx...

Skylake now. AMD Zen is going to be exciting but there's no way AMD is going to be able to catch Intel in performance. There was a big discussion about this a little while back. AMD just doesn't have the fund to turn out CPUs like Intel can.

DX12 is still new. I think there's only 1 game beta that uses it. There are implications that DX12 will use Hyper Threading and more cores. But I'm a skeptic until I see it.

The guy that posted above you mentioned that AMD Zen will be released in late 2016 (i thought it would be late 2015 lol) so I guess AMD Zen is out of the picture. Now it stands between 6600K and 6700K depending on how much of a difference hyper-threading makes in DX12. You mentioned that 1 game beta uses DX12. Which game beta is that and what is the first game that will be released with DX12 support?

Not sure of the release date. But again, these are preliminary results. Much can change considering Windows 10 has been out for a month.

I quess if you are really big AMD fan you could do that , but its not really worth it really , as much as i love AMD the buldozer was a complete disaster for them (high power consuption , lower performance than its counterparts only good thing was price , but its sad to have top of the line AMD competing against Intel i5).
