firewire - still useful?

so i'm digging through my box of random computer crap, and come across two items. one is a USB3 bracket (PCI slot) which ok i can use in my server since that chassis doesn't have front-panel USB3 ports. good.

the other is a single PCI slot Firewire bracket. one firewire connector going to a single motherboard block. it's a 6-pin, which i guess is fairly standard as far as firewire is concerned.

use it for something? scrap it?

currently i have nothing that it would actually connect to, but i may in the future get one of those external hard drive bays that has 2-4 slots (or even a single docking bay, top-load like a toaster). just wondering if it's worth keeping track of...

Well, you can do the same with USB, so...

firewire was made by apple a long time ago before usd 2.0. it was a lot faster than usb 1 was so it got a lot of use in various devices. as soon as usb 2.0 came out and was just as fast and could be used without all the apple royalties, it very quickly replaced firewire as the go to connection.

anything now you buy should be usb 3.0 or better for external mass storage devices. firewire has not been updated since it came out so would still be slower usb 2.0ish speeds instead of the nice faster usb 3.0 stuff available

this is why it is not worth holding onto unless you have any older firewire devices you still want to use. which is highly unlikely since it has been A LONG TIME since these devices were even made.
