Solution
The r9 390 constantly edges out the GTX 970 in benchmarks (very slightly) and has more vram, but the 970 is cooler, more efficient, has better driver support, and usually comes with some free games. If all you are interested in is fps, get the 390. If you need a simplified gaming experience, get the 970.

Btw, I'm an AMD fanboy

also, if you do get the 970, I reccomend going for a different brand, as I have had TERRIBLE experiences with Asus but have nothing but great things to say about Msi.

This is a matter of opinion. The only big differences are vram amount, overclocking potential, and power usage. The gtx 970 has less vram (only about 3.5 gb of usable vram), but more overclocking potential and more power efficiency. On the other hand, the r9 390 has more vram (8gb). However, vram isn't usually a bottlenecking factor. The only way you'll use more than about 4gb of vram if if you plan on playing middelearth: som or heavy modded skyrim.
