Triple SLI for 3d surround's sake? Or dual SLI, but better cards?

I'm now considering either adding a third 980 for a triple monitor 1080p 3d surround setup, but people are recommending a dual SLI system for my needs.

It a third GPU a good idea for 3d surround's sake?

If I were to get 2 ti's, how would the two monitors that are connected to the same GPU be affected, or it it better to connect all of the monitors into one GPU, and just use the other GPU's for improving FPS quality?

I'd get the 980 ti's simply to future proof the system. The rule of thumb is less cards = better. And I'm not sure about nvidia but on amd's side they recommend having the monitors connected to a single gpu rather than both. It may be different for nvidia but I doubt it. And plus the 980 ti's perform a lot better.

If you have no problem with sli's and money is an issue however then yeah you can go with a third 980. Especially depending on your budget. 980 ti's are expensive as hell
