Hey Everyone! Since all the new games are coming out in November I feel like my PC wont be able to handle them on max settings. I decided that I was going to upgrade from a gtx 770 to a GTX 970 but I am not sure if my motherboard will survive. Here is my current build:
Processor: Intel Core i7-4790k
Graphics Card: MSI GeForce GTX 770
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB 2x4gb
Motherboard: MSI B85M-G43 LGA 1150
Powersupply: CX600 600W
Hard Drive: 2 TB Wester Digital Hardrive

If I were you I'd reconsider. Compare the benchmarks: http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=2438&gid2=881&compare=geforce-gtx-970-4gb-vs-geforce-gtx-770

The GTX 770 and the GTX 970 are pretty close. I wouldn't say the upgrade is quite worth it just yet, from a budget point of view. That aside, to answer your original question, a check in PCpartpicker tells me that the motherboard and GTX 970 are compatible. However, again, I'd advise you to reconsider upgrading, as you won't really see that much of a performance boost IMHO. I'd say that if you'd want to make a worthwhile upgrade you should save for GTX 980 Ti or AMD Fury X.

I really don't have a budget so anything that could play any game Ultra settings with 60 fps, but from what I have heard and seen the 980 Ti performs much better than the 970. So is it worth getting?

3 problems, motherboard is weak for an overclockable i7.....i7 is too much cpu for gaming but since you own it already go with it. second the power supply you have is not good quality.... you risk a decent systems safety over a cheap part, third i would either say yes go for the 970 or spend $10 more and get an msi r9 390 gaming edition 8gb for $314 (2x the vram of the 970

Why would I worry about power when the 980 and the 970 uses less?

I didnt say anything about the power? I am saying wait because the next line of gpu's will probably have a better upgrade for less money.

my point with the power is not the amount its the quality the cx power supplies are not a good quality power supply....id rather spend $70-80 on a better quality power supply than risk $500-600 card plus the motherboard and cpu possibly getting fried when the low quality power supply goes out. but if you are comfortable with the risk then i say happy gaming.

If you upgrade to the GTX 980 Ti you will be playing games at max settings for a looong while to come, but you'd also need to upgrade the power supply as it might not be able to handle it. My recommendation is picking up any of the following brands: Antec, SeaSonic or EVGA.

don't forget superflower, xfx both tier one as well as the capstone series from rosewill.

for the power supply get a EVGA G2, its a rebranded superflower leadex, but cheaper; and its Tier 1. I have this in my system and the fan does not spin at all! so 0db noise from the psu. Do you need a k series cpu? If you are not going to overclock i would get a standard i7. even better a xeon 1231 v3, its the same as a i7 4770, but cheaper. use the savings towards a better gpu and psu.
