Can I skip Deus Ex 1?

I got Dues EX: GOTY, Deus Ex: Human Revolution-Directors Cut, Deus Ex: Invisible War, and Deus Ex: The Fall on a Steam sale and I've been playing the first one, but I just can't stand the outdated the mechanics, I don't mind the graphics just something erks me about the game. So my question is; can I skip over Dues Ex 1 and on to the next one without missing either A) A vital part to the story. Or B) An awesome game. Any help would be great.

Deus Ex 1 is usually considered the best of them all (in terms of how much it offers in terms of playing your own way), but the sotry is not particulary required for Deus Ex HUman revolution (in the deus ex timeline human revolution happens BEFORE Deus Ex 1).
You will miss very few things if you skip it (most of them are only important to purists and die hard fans, me included, so no, you dont have to play it).

Its not a different timeline (there are clear references to characters in deus ex 1 in HR).
Should you?
If anything, you can play it AFTER deus Ex human revolution. That way if you really like the story, it will not only make more sense but be clearer.
