I built a system in June, purchased a retail copy from a reseller at that time. Validated and has been working just fine for 3 months. Today I booted up and got the notice that this is a non genuine copy. I also lost my Win 10 upgrade option because of this. I had it up until today and was waiting a few months to upgrade. Went through the reactivation process with the original key and it says it's not genuine. Haven't changed any hardware since the original build and MS is no help at all. Any ideas? Much appreciated!

My son in law purchased it through someone he has done business with for years. I spoke with my SIL today and he going to contact him for his advice, but just sent the message, so haven't had a response yet. He hasn't experienced any previous problems with licenses before. I'll post any updates I hear on the subject soon as I hear back. I'm a bit inpatient, so I thought I'd ask here and see what might be known on the problem. I see it mentioned in many different forums, with many different answers. I know enough to get into trouble, so I ask before leaping....lol! Thank you for your reply and thanks for your service!

Thank you, that's kind of where my mind was going too. I haven't spoken with a human at MS, just the automated system and of course all of the online options to reactivate, multiple times. I'm a little baffled why it would work so well for the last 3 months and then authorize the Win 10 upgrade if it was bogus to begin with. Any thoughts on that? Thanks again...

Hacked/fake versions of windows tend to block updates. When you update the hack/fake version can be detected. The system files can be repaired and the activation then fails when it is checked again. The license validation is checked on some sort of schedule. Some hacks turns off the license notification so you don't get the notification until the final stages.

I would guess that malware or hack program could modify a valid system to look like a invalid system.

Thanks John! As the consensus seems to indicate, I was most likely sold a pirated copy. The fact that it blew up on the 90 day mark would support that, right? I've got a couple of questions, if I may. Is there any point in extending the trial period? What happens to those people that upgraded to Win 10 before something like this occurs? If I had upgraded, would I have ended up with an unlicensed copy of Win 10 after the fact or is MS authorizing it if you beat the clock? I know they have softened up a bit, but have no idea how much.

Never having experienced this before, if I purchase a new license, will my existing copy be activated without changes, or is it going to require a full reinstall? I've got this copy imaged on a second internal HD and on Carbonite. I thought I had done it all correctly, this was my first build. Best laid plans...?

Thanks to everyone for their advice and taking the time to reply.

Can I apply a legitimate license to this copy and continue forward or do I have to start from scratch? I appreciate all of the knowledge and advice. This is an excellent forum and resource!

Not knowing the provenance of the actual original install media, and knowing that a bogus license key is often accompanied by a bogus install....
I would start over completely. No telling what that actual install contains, whatever license (or non-license) it has.

I'm now curious if I should forego replacing Win 7 and wait a few months and install 10? Any advantages to that? I was planning on performing the upgrade in the Spring when I thought I had it reserved. If I buy Win 7 Ult. again, I might just keep it around a bit longer. I had just upgraded from my old XP machines when this issue happened. I like 7 and 10 might not be bug free for a while. Opinions?

The other actual problem is that you will be spending far too much on features you will never use.
Win 7 Ultimate is significantly more expensive than Win 7 Home or Pro, or Win 10 Home. And it is a rare home user that sees any benefit from those extra things that come with Ultimate.

I chatted with MS support earlier and you're right, I will have to perform a fresh install with a new key, regardless of where I got the original. Seems strange that even with the original coming straight from MS, they say a fresh install is required. I guess each install somehow incorporates the first key used into itself and "taints" it. So basically, bad key = bad install, forever.

windows enterprise versions use a different key validation method and it actually does require a total reinstall when you go to a retail version.

Everyone contributing to my initial question has provided great insight into it. I appreciate each contribution to my query. This is my first use of this fine forum and recommend it to anyone needing prompt, friendly and most importantly, knowledgeable advice. Thank you!
