Moving everything from Boot HDD to SSD with Windows Backup?

Most articles I read on moving data from a HDD to an SSD always mention a third party cloning program. Even some YouTube technicians I watch say the same.

So I'm wondering if Windows Backup is an acceptable method for changing from a HDD to an SSD? I've never heard it mentioned.

I intend to do a fresh install of Windows on a new SSD that is the same size or larger than my current boot HDD and restoring my programs, settings and data from a backup Windows Backup made afterwards:

  • Backup current boot drive to external HDD with Windows Backup
Unplug boot HDD and plug in SSD
    Install Windows (Fresh)
Restore with Backup from external HDD
    Reconnect and wipe previous HDD

Is this a proper method for migrating to an SSD?

Yes. Some SSD manufacturers (Samsung) include a Data migration utility.
Otherwise, one of these: Macrium Reflect, Acronis Trueimage, Easus Todo, Casper.
