Hello, I'm looking to build a pc for casual gaming and for media streaming and was hoping to gain some insight from all the experienced builders here. I should note that I'm also hoping to minimize my upgrading in the near future for next gen gaming. (i.e. Star wars and the like) here's my speculative list of components for the build:

Asrock Z97 Pro4 LG'S 1150 ATC
I5-4690k 3.5 ghz
Asus strix GTX 970
Corsair vengeance 8gb ram
Raidmax vampire rx-800 gh 800w 80+ gold
San disk 240gb ssd
Probably windows 8

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Yes sir, z97. About the PSU...which would you recommend and if you could explain to me why since I'm not well versed, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again!

Also the 970 doesn't fully support dx12(async shaders). Even though it outperforms the alternative at the moment, you might want to get something with full dx12 support and at least 4gb of vram to be more future proof.

@CTurbo Will the PSU below suffice? It's not on the list, I only see the Thermaltake Toughpower but I'd have to shift my budget for that, which I'm willing to do but I don't see where I'd be able to cut...thanks!

Thermaltake PS-TPG-0850MPCGUS-1

@nonsleeper As far as the gfx card is concerned, which would you recommend?

I would get a Seasonic, XFX, Antec, Super Flower, Rosewill Capstone, or EVGA B2, G2, or GS.
I would not get a Thermaltake.

The GTX970 is a great gpu.

If possible, get a Samsung or Crucial ssd.

If you're strapped on your budget, get an i5 4460 or 4590 and a H97 motherboard.

I wouldn't recommend any gfx card at the moment. I'd say wait until Nvidia releases Pascal, or go with r9 290x/390 with 8gb vram.
If you are going to be playing dx11 games only, 970 for 1080p and 980 or better for higher resolutions.

@CTurbo thanks for the quick replies, i greatly appreciate your advice. As far as the mobo and processor I chose, the reason I chose those two in particular is because micro center has that combo for $294.98

http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/intel-processor-bundles.aspx

I'll look into PSUs some more. Would you recommend 800w 80+ gold? Or can I settle for 80+ bronze? Or do I even need 800w?

Also, I already received my sandisk ssd today so I think I'll have to roll with this for now and possibly upgrade sometime in the future. Do I need another hdd as well?

Thanks!

@nonsleeper I've been told my multiple people to pick nvidia over and when it comes to gpus. I've also read that a r9 290 isn't comparable to the 970 in the slightest, but I'll continue to do some more research (google-ing). Thanks!

$294 is not a good deal on that combo. You could get an i5 4590 + H97 for around $210-220 that would give you 99% of the performance.

No need to get more than a 650w psu. Anything by Seasonic, XFX, Antec, Super Flower, Rosewill Capstone, or EVGA B2, G2, or GS.

The 4590 is $159 at microcenter

@CTurbo:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wfZZbv

**EDIT: I should add this link here: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/ade4b37d#/ade4b37d/33

i5-4590 for $159.99 if I bundle with a mobo. The H97 Anniversary isn't listed but there are two other ASRock H97 boards for $54.99 & $59.99 for a total of $214.98 or $219.98 and I can go pick it up on my way home from work...

I can also bundle RAM as well

How does this list look? Keeping in mind that I casually game once in a while and am looking to play star wars battlefront on high settings and some other next gen/upcoming games. (i.e. borderlands 3, the division, etc.)

Thanks!

970 is suggested a lot based on its strong history. You mentioned that you want to minimize the need for upgrading, then you would be better off with a card that has highr than 4gb vram and fully supports dx12. The 970 doesn't have hardware async shading. Current versions only have 4gb ram (well, 3.5gb effective according to some sources). They perform very well with dx11 games at the moments, but their position is kind of shaky.

This is a benchmark of 8gb versions of r9 390: https://www.techpowerup.com/mobile/reviews/Powercolor/R9_390_PCS_Plus/22.html
Also shows that 290 is within few frames of 970, however I don't suggest 290 unless you are into overclocking. The 290x at the minimum and if you can get it cheap, r9 390 with 8gb vram is better.

If you are into brands, then get what makes you happy. It is your money and if you are happier with a card that says Nvidia on the box, then you should definitly get 970.

@nonsleeper: that's not the case at all, I'm actually coming from an AMD gpu right now so I'm definitely not biased towards one brand or the other. I'll definitely look into the AMD cards, namely the 390 8gb vram. Thanks and I appreciate the information/insight provided.

@CTurbo: thanks again for your all your insight!

@sadab0: thanks for your input as well, I'm still researching GPU's and still not sure which one to go with. I've been reading that the 390 or 290x (i forget which one) outperforms the 970 at 1440p and @nonsleeper had mentioned that 970 doesn't fully support dx12 and that I should get 980 if i want to game at 1440p. bottom line, i'm still not sure which card to get
