I bought a 2TB WD My Passport hard drive for my car to play some music. Since my cars USB didnt recognize it I thought I should format it to FAT32 (was originally NTFS) to be able to read it. After formatting my hard drive worked fine and allowed me to add my music back onto it. After plugging it into my car and getting the unsupported error again I went back to see what the problem was and my computer did not find the USB in the this PC folder but was able to find it in disk management. I tried doing a "new simple volume" to create a new partion since there was unallocated space but I keep getting this error that say "The operation is not supported by the object." Please can someone help me with this problem because I spent waaay to much money on this hard drive for it to not be recognized by not even my computer now.

Hey there, Novoj!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD My Passport external drive. However, I'm afraid that you won't get it properly recognized by your car audio system though. :( I'd recommend you to re-format the drive (but keep in mind that this will erase all the music you've already transferred onto it) and see if it will get properly recognized and accessed from your computer afterwards. If you are unable to do that through Disk Management, you can try using Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) and use the diskpart commands to erase the drive: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html

Be careful when selecting the drive, so that you don't erase any of your internal HDDs.

As for using portable external HDDs in your car is highly dangerous for them. Mechanical drives are very sensitive and the car is moving, so the WD Passport is bound to get constantly knocked/dropped which could result in physical damage that will make drive unusable afterwards. I'd strongly recommend you to consider having a USB flash/pen drive instead of a mechanical one.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting though! :)
