I am having a nightmare attempting to fix sisters Laptop, i don't know original cause but later found it could have been to do with upgrade from Windows 8 to 10 not completing though could be completely wrong. On command prompt it does say version 10.10240 but it was still 8 when she last used it.

The laptop was stuck on an automatic repair loop that would just keep restarting. I tried doing a system restore which did not work, i tried changing boot options, going back to previous build and system reset all failed.

I then tried bootrec /rebuildbcd bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot
This only led to the Laptop then loading with the message, no bootable device.
I had to create recovery drive which allowed me to try Reset PC again which continued to say partition missing.

I attempted another fix which was to create a partition with some instructions but in the end it said 0 installations of Windows was found. This Laptop came with Windows 8 pre-installed.
I found that the C: Drive was somehow RAW rather than NTFS so i formatted and it returned to NTFS.

I still couldn't create partition to boot Windows and have same problems as before, did formatting completely ruin any chance of getting Windows to boot at all? It did say 0 installations even before i did that but now i've cleared everything, i don't even care about data loss just want to get it working somehow.

This Laptop is a Toshiba S50-A, it did not come with any CD's only with Windows 8 pre-installed and i don't even know know how to open the DVD drive on it, it has a shape of it on the side but no button to open from outside whatsoever can only use USB Drive.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

No, you need to use only one, and you need to use the boot menu to select the USB device or else it will likely go to the main OS partition. If selecting the USB media from the boot menu results in the disk being inaccessible, the disk is likely broken. If the machine refuses to boot from anything (dvd, USB, hdd), then there is likely something wrong with the motherboard.
You can always take out the disk and put it into an enclosure to recover data first. There are several free software options for recovering the data as long as the disk is not broken.

As for reinstalling, just download the media creation tool from microsoft's website, it will let you make USB or DVD install media. When you install, make sure that all partitions are deleted and create a new one (using advanced install options)

Thanks for reply Basroil.

I did create a USB with Windows 10 using media creation tool however it would not boot unlike the Recovery USB. Do they both need to be inserted at the same time?

Yeah only my Recovery USB seems to boot normally. When i choose to boot from Windows 10 USB i made on media creation tool it just did the check media - no bootable device found again as if it kept trying to do it from hard drive. Maybe it is really completely ruined. Thanks again for replies.

Hey i tried CSM Boot and it booted the Windows 10 installation, i had to skip product key because i don't have one as it was free upgrade so not sure how to activate later..

I am now at custom install so do i delete all the partitions, even the recovery ones, msr and primary one? It says i can't install it in any either way but i just want to be sure i do the right thing.

Then i click 'new' to create a new partition? It is currently grayed out

Okay sorry for multiple posts but i now deleted partitions and install has begun.

What do i do about activating after if this install goes successfully? Will it remember i had a free upgrade as i have no key, will it become unusable?

Thanks

You should ideally install Windows 8 first (using the media creation tool for windows 8.1, it is not the same tool as for 10).

If you had already installed Windows 10 on the machine and confirmed activation, it should automatically activate.

Thanks for your help Basroil.

I installed 8 and Windows 10 is now in queue for future install as well.

Only thing that is weird is that the Laptop was never able to boot in UEFI since initial problem, only way to boot it is CSM. But hopefully that isn't too big of an issue anyway?
