Windows 7 Won't Boot after BIOS Update

I have been building a new PC. I spent many hours on it getting it just the way I want. I finally got Windows 7.1 installed and fully updated and had reserved my copy of Windows 10, but I have not installed it yet.

I decided to update the firmware on my MOBO since it was a little out dated.

A little about my system:
MOBO ASUS Z97 Pro Gamer
CPU Intel i7 4790K
OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
HDD - SATA, 750 GB 7200 RPM (no RAID)

The MOBO had version 2002 BIOS
I updated it to version 2016 BIOS

After I did that windows will no longer boot. It just tries to go into recovery mode but that fails to fix the issue.

I read some threads about ensuring that the HDD in the BIOS is still set to AHCI and not IDE. I verified that is in fact still set to AHCI in the BIOS.

Even after I re-flashed the BIOS to version 2002 it still will not boot.

I'm really hopping I don't have to reinstall the OS again.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Were/Are you running overclocked? Have you reset to defaults in the BIOS? Not sure with your particular BIOS, but most now allow for saving multiple settings configurations, do you have any settings saved? Have you tried loading them?

I would reset to defaults and then ensure the HDD is AHCI and boot. If that does not work, try matching your previous overclock settings if any and try booting again.
