Hello all, I am looking into upgrading my computer. It is mainly used for gaming. My current specs are amd phenom II x6 1090t, EVGA GTX 780, corsair 850w plus psu, 8 gigs ddr3 ram can be overclocked to 2333 currently at either 1600 or 1866 don't remember, Samsung evo pro 256gig ssd, 1tb hdd. Currently running at 1920x1080 one monitor. Don't plan on dual or 4k any time soon. I also use a lot of flight sims as well as GameCube and ps2 emulators.

Upgrade options: i5 6600k skylake with 16 gigs ddr4 ram. Or I5 4690k haswell.

So my question is which will be better? I know that ddr4 right now does not provide many performance increases but it very well could in the future and if I'm upgrading I don't want to be stuck in the past, however I don't want to just throwaway money. And as far as processor performance I can't say as I have seen many good benchmarks for skylake v haswell. Does anybody know good or bad to either of these processors?

Honestly, you wouldn't see any difference between 4690K and a 6600K on a 780, even at stock settings. When we are talking about overclocking these CPUs, then whatever small difference was there would vanish completely.

IMO, you have a couple of options.

1) If you really feel the need to have the latest and greatest, get the 6600K. But I don't recommend it. You'd have to buy new motherboard AND new ram.

2) A 780 will be perfectly fine even with the cheapest and slowest Haswell i5, the 4460. Therefore, buy Haswell and forget Skylake. If you really want to overclock, the 4690K is your best bet. If you want the best bang for your buck, a 4460 will do just as fine for a 780 in all games. Also, buying a Haswell CPU instead of a Skylake...

But is there really going to be much of a difference between the haswell and the skylake processor? I have read that the skylake stays a little bit cooler than the haswell but that's about it, I can't say as I have seen much along the lines of performance.

Going skylake is about another $200 because I also have to buy the new ram as well. I just don't know if the price is worth the small increase in performance and the ability for ddr4 ram.

go with 4960k just moved from a phenom x6 t1100 big difference in cpu bound game GTA5 for instance was getting 45-50fps with dips of 40fps with the phenom.
with the 4690k solid 60fps. the skylake may be faster but not by much. imho i cant see the point of spending more for 5-10% increase save your self the money mate :)

If you want the best bang for your buck, a 4460 will do just as fine for a 780 in all games. Also, buying a Haswell CPU instead of a Skylake CPU will allow you to keep your ram, so it's a cheaper investment. Not to mention the 6600K is more expensive than 4690K.

3) Alternatively, instead of buying a Haswell CPU, namely the i5 4690K specifically, you can buy a Broadwell CPU, the 5765C. It uses less power and it can overclock easy to around 4.2 GHz, which is 1 GHz faster than a 4460 and since it has a faster architecture, it will be slightly faster than a 4690k at 4.2 GHz too. The 4690K can overclock easy to 4.4-4.8 GHz though, so there's that.

So your options are as follows: a) i5 4460, if you don't bother overclocking, b) i5 5765C, if you want newer tech and lower power usage, c) if you want best performance for lowest amount of money, i5 4690K.

It probably has to do with your setup.

I got a M4A89GTD running 1090t at 3.9ghz gaming load temperatures of 40-50C and idle at 30C when room temp is 22
