Hi,
Im buying a laptop for an elderly person. He uses the laptop for web browsing and skype.

I Have 2 laptops Choose from:
Lenovo Essential G50-30 N2840 4GB 500GB W8.1
Lenovo Essential B590 1005M 4GB 500GB W8

I cannot find any benchmarks regarding the 1005m processor, so dont know which laptop would be better. Thanks for any advice :)

The Celeron 1005m should be the more powerful of the two CPUs.

The N2840 is a Bay Trail Atom CPU which has consumes very little power compared to the 1005m and can offer better battery life. The 1005m is based on the 3rd generation Ivy Bridge CPU. While the 1005m has lower clock speeds than the N2840, the fact that it less powerful version of a Core i3 CPU means it should have better performance.

If it matters, the Intel HD (Ivy Bridge) graphics core is more powerful than the Intel HD (Bay Trail) graphics core, but it is still pretty weak compared to recent Intel HD graphics that have model numbers like the Intel HD 4000, Intel HD 4400, and Intel HD 5500.
