Video editor freezes or lags when splitting videos, or when adding more tracks to the file

Hey everyone!
I have been going through a couple of video editors recently to test some.
The one I had, just started to get some freezing, and lagging when adding tracks and splitting videos. I have the trial for another one, and it does the exact same thing! This just recently started happening and I never had issues with this before, and i'm not sure why this is happening! Thanks!

System Spces:
CPU: 4790k
GPU: GTX 970 FTW+
OS: Windows 8
RAM: 16 GB ddr3 1600 Mhz
HDD: 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM

I'm thinking that I might need a better hard drive, but want to make sure before I get another one.

I just went and did what you suggested, my disk usage % averaged around 5-10% with 1 spike to about 68% and 1 to 30%, the thing it is using the most is my CPU. Do i need to change the rendering to software rendering? I am not sure how to do that, but read that it could fix this problem.

I was using HitFilm 3 originally, but it was freezing up and lagging so much that I had to look for a different one. Right now I am trialing WonderShare Filmora, and they have a GPU acceleration option but only for GTX 500 series and below. So I am pretty much stuck.
