Hey Guys, thats the question,

For gaming, is it worth exchange a I7 870 2.9 for a I5 4690K or 6600K ? In other words, an old I7 for a brand new I5 ?

With turboboost I can get 3.6Ghz on my I7

Basically 90% of my pc usage are for gaming, I have an old I7 870 2.9ghz running with a GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 Gaming Windforce.

Im playing games like GTA V on ultra settings, but sometimes my fps drops to 53 - 50.
I know I will also have to exchange my MoBo, thats part of my plans.

Thanks in advance.

Solution
I had an old i5 760 overclocked to 3.5GHz, and on CPU heavy games like GTA V I would still have my framerates dip into the 40s in the city, even with population density turned down. Moving to an i5 6600k at stock speed significantly improved performance, and I can now maintain 60FPS in the city at maximum population density.

If you're playing really CPU heavy games like GTA V, it can certainly be worthwhile moving to a newer platform from a Lynnfield CPU. Be advised if you do go for Skylake you'd need new RAM as well unless you get one of the few LGA1151 boards out there that supports DDR3.

Solution
Yes you will see a pretty big jump in performance. The i7 860 was based on the first generation of the Core i series and there have been a lot of changes under the hood.

The biggest benefit is that the CPU will allow the GPU to breath more allowing for higher low FPS to allow you a more consistent 60FPS, which you should get with a GTX 970 at 1080P.

Definitely a yes on the 6600K. The higher clock speed, DDR4 and superior architecture are all major upgrades from your current CPU. For current gaming with your current GPU, it'll still be an upgrade but as newer more demanding games start coming out and you upgrade your GPU once or twice you'll be set vs if you stuck with the 870.
