Hey,

I decided I will revitalize my old HP DV6 as it was just lying around unused. I installed my old Kingston HyperX 3K SSD and installed Win 10. After that I noticed windows only recognizes 2GB of RAM insted of 4GB. So I checked BIOS and found it wont recognize other stick. I tried to remove each stick a also tried different slots, combinations. I updated bios and reinstalled windows 10 but it still just see only one stick when 2 are installed.

Solution

1. Clean the contact using rubbing alcohol and a Qtip
2. Check your BIOS for something like Memory hole remapping or memory remapping and enable that.
3. Run Memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/
4. Contact the laptop support and see if they know of anything about this problem. Even if your out of warranty you can still get some info on it (they may even help). Contact Windows 10 support and see if they know about the issue. If they try to charge you just tell them you are gathering information on the issue.

Let me ask you this, are the ports all working properly? A bad motherboard could have a faulty RAM slot, USB slot, can't run programs without major issues etc. My HP envy has a bad mobo and it's only 2 years old, these things happen usually without knowing for example the ram slot on my laptop just went, was working fine after bios update then a hour later doesn't work. One usb port also fails to work after this happen.

Not saying it is bad but like I said this type of thing creeps up out of nowhere sometimes.

All my ports work without problems, just checked it. Also, both of my slots work if I use only one stick in any of them. The one thing that annoys me is that I dont have access to all options in BIOS like SATA IDE/AHCI mode etc. Could be there some option like dual channel? Can I somehow unlock "Advanced" BIOS options?

Check to see what version of windows you installed. If it is windows 10 32 bit then you may only be limited to 2gb. I have read that 32 bit windows 10 supports 4gb but I have also heard that some people have been having problems with getting it to recognize more than 2gb.

I am sure I installed Windows 10 64 bit Home, otherwise it would not activate, right? Apart from that, I only see 2GB of RAM also in my BIOS not only in Windows.

1. already tried that
2. unfotunately, i cant see advanced options tab in BIOS - I guess either HP blocked it or only sells laptops with limited BIOS
3. tried, both memtest86 and memory test that comes with my BIOS - they both see only 2GBs, so ...
4. thats what I will try now for sure, I will maybe even try to contact reseller who sold me the laptop and few friends

thank you

By any chance have you received a static shock when touching your laptop before this happened?
The reason I ask is something similar happened to me a couple of years ago but I also fried all of my USB ports. I didn't fry any of my memory but when I searched online to see what I could do some people had reported issues with memory.

I dont think so, I experienced something like that looong time ago with that laptop, but it only affected mentioned USB ports and everything was OK after reboot. And also no problems with RAM at that time.
