Hi,

I'm having a problem installing windows 8.1 from a USB flash drive, Basically none of my HDDs have an OSs on them so logically I tried to install Windows onto one of them, but when i turn the PC on with a bootable USB containing 8.1 (created using Rufus, using GPT parition for UEFI and on FAT32).

All that happens is that the I can see like a windows 8.1 loading circle thing for a few seconds then it turns off and restarts. I thought it was something to do with secure boot but its already disabled in the BIOS.

I made sure that all the connections on the motherboard were secure as well.

Any suggestions as to what i might be doing wrong?

Below are the specifications of my PC

Intel Core i7 6700k
Corsair Vengeance 4 x 8GB DDR4 3000MHz RAM
2 x Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 4GB
Crucial MX100 512GB
Sandisk Ultra II 480GB
2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM HDDs (1 x 1TB, 1 x 3TB)
Dell U2715H
BenQ FP241w
Gigabyte Gaming G1 Z170x Motherboard

When I enter the BIOS its fine, it doesnt restart or anything so I can stay in the BIOS for 10+ mins. I shall have a look at the voltage to ensure its at 1.35v, Out of curiosity what would enabling XMP do? the BIOS does pick up all the RAM in each slot too.

UPDATE: Still no luck, It still does the same thing, though when I tried a Windows 7 bootable USB, it didnt work at first, but then after i changed the voltage from 1.20v to 1.35v of the RAM it got as far as "Setup loading files" and then after it finished i got a message saying:

“File: \Windows\System32\boot\winload.efi Status: 0xc0000359”

It said the file was corrupt or missing.

This is when i created this drive, I didnt use Rufus, i used the manual method, and as part of the steps as i was installing an x64 version of windows i had to get a file from the install.wim file inside the ISO image. but the thing is, i only had an install.esd file which i converted (used the index to use the 64bit wim), located the bootmgfw.efi file and put it in the relevant place in the flash drive.

Could it be because im still using the install.esd on the USB instead of replacing it with the install.wim that i converted?

So i found an old hard drive with windows 7 already installed and tried booting from that with nothing else but RAM and the CPU and the one SSD in, and it did the same thing so it basically got past the windows is loading files and then starting windows and then switched off when i booted from a USB with windows 7 install on it. I then tried to let it boot the copy of windows already on the SSD and it restarted at the same point....BUT...now that i plugged in a SSD with an OS already on it, i get the option to boot in safe mode, and i get my old login screen and can login fine without the PC restarting.

So basically i can only start an OS on my new build in safe mode. Im not sure now if its the motherboard thats gone weird as safe mode might only be using the bare components it need from the motherboards....any ideas?

Sounds to me like your install medium is faulty. Use another usb key. Prepair it with "wintoflash" that you run as admin (Rufus has mixed results sometimes). Use setup to flash option with default values.
