Guys I have bought most of the components for my new pc and I was thinking, can I transfer everything from my old pc to the new one that I'm building?

Solution
If you're building with a new motherboard you really need a new windows installation. Basically you can't just plug in the hard drive and go. People here have done it, there are ways to do it, but it is far more headache than worth it, and you won't get optimal performance out of it.

The best thing you could do is back up your personal data, save games, etc, and wipe that drive and start over.

you mean take the hard drive out the old one and plug it in the new one with windows and stuff already on it?

if so it might just blue screen you or it may work--a clean install is always best

and will probably have to go through the phone microsoft to reregister windows even if it does work

You can try it (plug in the HD and go), but its going to be a mess. If you did the upgrade from 7 or 8 to 10 you may be SOL on reusing 10.

No offense but if you can drop $whatever on new equipment, then you really should consider the extra $130 for the proper OS software to run it.

New system = you really, really, really need to do a clean OS install.
Whether this requires a new OS license ($$) is a whole different thing, and depends on what type of license it is.

But you cannot use that same OS license on two machines. One or the other.

The only things you can 'back up' are your personal files, and probably Steam based games.
Copy your files elsewhere, and copy the steamapps folder.

All of the applications will need to be reinstalled.

Well it depends what you want to back up, but do you have an external hard drive or some thumb drives, or worst case blank DVD's you can burn to? All you want to do is copy any personal files on to there, as well as your save games (if you have games that don't use steam/origin/etc and cloud save). You also want to copy over the installations for any programs you may have downloaded if they are available. Otherwise theres not much else you can back up as any programs you have will need to be re-installed from their original media or re-downloaded.

Going from that old dual core to a new i5......no question.
Clean install of the OS.

Now....how did Windows 10 get on there? Upgrade from a previous Win 7 or 8.1? If so, you're probably out of luck. You will almost certainly have to purchase a new OS.
You have a whole different machine.

yup I upgraded it from my windows 7 ultimate, I also plan to buy a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD because the current motherboard that I'm using is a LGA 775 socket and the speeds are real low
