Oh my bad didn't see he had an h97, yeah even if you could overclock on that mobo , i wouldn't. It's not designed for it, i'd go with the non o.c. solution. Or the E3 that guan said. Though you won't see any real world applications.
Wait it's a 4 core i get it's xeon so they took out the intergrated graphics but it's still only 4 cores does it perform that much better then a non oc'ed 4690? They should have the same core count and hyperthreads?
E3-1231V3 has 4 cores with HT. The cores performance are more or less the same as i5 4690. It is just like i5 4690 but with HT.
The same goes for i7 4790, it is basically an i5 4690 but with HT.
E3-1231V3 is like an i7 4790 but without the iGPU, which you do not really need , if you use a dedicated GPU.
Price is the interesting part for E3-1231V3, it has almost the same price like i5 4690k.
Yes, it is a Xeon and it is not really meant outside server world but for normal users, you will see E3-1231V3 exactly the same as i7 4790 without iGPU
Thus, if you do not OC, E3-1231V3 is a really nice/cheaper alternative to i7 4790.
