I am buying a new pc. Is it worth to spend 150$ more on skylake i7 6700k package(MBO+RAM+CPU) than to go with i7 4790K for 130-150$ less?? That are the price situations here in Europe. We already pay premium for PC hardware, and can someone consider is it worth to spend more if I am using my pc for gaming with gtx 980? Haswell-E is 60-80$ cheaper , and also motherboards are bit cheaper(nothing much but another 30-40$ means to me since I am already crosing my desired budget), and you know DDR4 is more expensive. So my question is, will it be a good step to save another 150$ in month and go with skylake or simply stick with my 4790k plan. How much performance can i expect from skylake(note that skylake motherboard i am planing to use is more expensive, but the same class as the z97 motherboard from same company.) Somebody please help decide.

The 4790K (Devil's Canyon, the refresh of Haswell) doesn't fare badly against the 6700K Skylake CPU from what I've seen. The Z170 chipset offers some improved features over the Z97, but the actual chip performance gains, without the iGPU, aren't worth the extra $150. (imo)

The 980 is a good GPU which you should easily enjoy gaming with.

I don't think i need faster drives since the speeds that i have seen with Samsung 840 Evo basic ssd from my friend are awesome. I am planing on using 850 pro (only the waranty). So i don't really see the point of even faster drive since i will not be using any heavy applications except gaming and maybe some light-video editing.
What about USB 3.1? Is it any neccesary? I am planing to use that machine for 5 years, only to upgrade graphics card in 3 years. My only concern is that there is some feature of Z170 that I will miss so much that i don't even know about yet. I know that in five years either of these two processors will be old and will demand for upgrade. Only other option is to go with AMD and save some money and buy a new machine in 2-3 years. But since my overall disappointment with AMD chipset and drivers(that's just my opinion), i have strictly gone with intel and willing to spend a little more money. Actually It is a lot of money for my parents
Price of

  • i7 4790k + air cooler(still considering which one)
    gtx 980
    16gb ddr3
    samsung ssd 250 gb + 1tb hdd(wd blue)
    650w psu(superflower 80+ gold) + case(define r5)
    Asus z97-a mbo

is 1950 usd here. It is way more expensive than USA prices.

If the price difference is that significant, then a Haswell machine will be 95% as good as a Skylake machine and will last you an almost identical amount of time. I don't think you will have a problem getting 5 years out of either.

I think DDR3 is the right call over DDR4 for now also - unless you are going for four sticks of DDR4 in quad-channel, the latency is such that decent DDR3 will outperform it. They do make a few Skylake Z170 motherboards that support normal DDR3 by the way, but again, if the cost of the processor is a problem, then don't worry about it.

^ yes I agree, there are no real features that are expected to pop up down the road in 5 years that will leave you stuck, look at the people with the sandy bridge CPUs, they are still quite happy. USB 3.1 is really neat, but I do not feel it will become a need as the regular USB port is still too common to phase out anytime soon.

I still haven't bought my pc due to some shipping issues because of the syrian refugees coming to croatia, and my question is:

will it be more price to performance build if I buy r9 390 8 gb over the gtx 980? it is 180$ cheaper. And that is a lot, I will game on 1080p monitor for a first few months, but planing to buy wide curved monitor with higher resolution(not 4k) That is the reason i was looking to gtx 980, but do i need to spend that 180$ or just pick up sapphire edition of 390??
