I am in the market for a market under $500.

I want an IPS, 1440p, 27" monitor.

I have narrowed it down to two options -

The PB278Q for $400

Or the MG279Q open box for $500 (has 144hz but it is an open box)

Is it worth the risk to get an open box 144hz monitor when I could get a 60 hz monitor for $100 less. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hard to answer w/o a stated usage. If gaming is involved, it's a whole 'nother discussion.

A really good gaming IPS 144Hz, 1440p monitor is going to cost you $720 (i.e. Acer XB270HU). If you are going to pay $500, that $200 difference is going to mean a lower quality panel. So you will either get a very good TN panel of a not so great IPS panel. So far the Acer is the only IPS I can recommend for gaming.

It also makes a difference what card(s) you are using.

NVidia allows you to use G-Sync and ULMB

AMD allows you to use Freesync but no Motion Blur reduction technology. This will either be missing or is provided by the monitor manufacturer. The quality or the presence of such tech varies from model to model.

Open Box monitor usually means, someone opened it, found a dead pixel (or 7 of them) and returned it.

Sorry I will be using it for gaming and media usage. I have a 980 ti. The MG279Q is around $600 retail and was recommended bu this vary site. i believe it to be a high quality display but I could be mistaken. I know it features freesync but some nvidia users buy it just because it is the only 144hz ips 1440p monitor that is not insanely high priced. The freesync on it can only go to 90hz anyway so I don't really care about that. The open box allows returns if it is defective but I suppose they might all have defects although newegg claims they test it to make sure it works.

Do you think it is worth the extra $100 for the open box MG279Q or do you think I should just go with the PB278Q?

And is there ULMB for it since I have a Nvidia card?

I don't think anyone should recommend a FreeSync monitor to you unless you're going to change teams.... but you have the latest Green Team GPU. So, there is no indication of switching teams this year.

You've purchased a top tier GPU. Your monitor is the part of your computer you will have the most interaction with. Pony up the extra dollars for a G-Sync monitor and ride off into the sunset. You won't regret it. The Acer XB270HU is a truly impressive display. I had the honor of testing one at the Tom's Free-Sync Vs. G-Sync event. =)
