SSD not getting 6 Gbps speed even when plugged into a SATA 3 port

Hi,

Just picked up a 120 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and a SATA 3 cable (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B009GUKOH4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) However I am only getting SATA 2 speeds even though it is plugged into a SATA 3 port on the MoBo. Is there something I need to do or some driver I need to install to utilize the SATA 3 port on the motherboard? Thanks in advance!

You should get sata 3 speeds when plugged into an Intel sata 3 adapter port.
Other sata adapters are not as efficient.
Exactly what motherboard and port are you using?
Are your motherboard drivers current and the ones designed for the sata adapter you are using?

IF there is a SATA driver available for your motherboard you would find it on the Motherboard makers web site in downloads for your board. These usually only apply when you have a second SATA 3 controller to expand your SATA amount on the board.

An SSD will not saturate the 6 GB/s speed of a SATA 3 connection, heck it wont saturate SATA 2 either. Why do you believe you are only getting SATA 2 speeds of 3GB/s throughput?

I know I am getting SATA 2 speeds becuase I ran benchmarks in both the Samsung Magician tool and a couple other 3rd party benchmarking programs.

1. Please show us a screenshot of that Magician window.
2. Are you plugged into an Intel port, or a Marvell port? It makes a difference.

It would be quite helpful in diagnosing your problem if you would share those results.

The answer to your original question is: no-there is nothing you need to do and no driver you need to install for SATA 3 speeds. A driver might enable some feature or give a very minor speed bump, but nothing like the difference between SATA 2 and 3. Something else is going on.

2. I believe it is an intel port.

Here is a screenshot of the benchmarks in the tools as well as the problem that says that it is plugged in a SATA 2 port even though its in a SATA 3 port http://imgur.com/AHrD4o3

That result is very close to what I get with a 250GB 840 EVO, plugged into a Marvell port.
Significantly slower than an identical drive plugged into a native Intel port.

What is your motherboard?
Which port is used?
On some motherboards, not all the ports are sata 3.
The magician report indicates you are not using a sata3 port, and that there are some available.
You may not have the motherboard manual available.
But, the Z75 chipset can give 4 sata ports, of which only 2 are sata 3 and 2 are sata 2.
Just change to a different port and retest.

Yea im an idiot lol. I plugged it into the SATA port labelled SATA 3 thinking that meant it was SATA III as in 6.0gbps but ONLY SATA 1 and 2 on the MOBO supported 6.0gbps lol, thanks for the answers
