Hi, I'm a fairly new to college computer engineering student.
I got a laptop from a friend that wanted me to try to recover her data off her hard drive. I heard that there was a clicking noise from the HDD when I tried to start her computer, so I moved it to my desktop to try it there. I plugged it in and nothing happened at first. After that, I got a little frustrated and tried a USB enclosure, it read it, but i couldn't get any of the actual data off it. It just showed up as a system recovery partition. It's a 320gb hard drive but it's also showing up as just a system recovery partition in the disk management screen.
I'm honestly stumped right now, and I would just like to ask the wizards on the forum here for what I should do. I'm pretty stubborn, but I didn't want to open the drive myself unless I had to. I've reseated the arm in hard drives before, but that's about it.
Please help!
If I need to post any screenshots or run any diagnostics just let me know.

Hey there, Chasecard.

A screenshot of what you see in Disk Management would be nice indeed. Is the system recovery partition the only one you can see, or the only one with data on it (are there any other partitions recognized from that HDD)?
I'd recommend that you don't run any diagnostic tools, as I'm you sure that you are well aware, that when there's an issue with an HDD, the first priority is data recovery. This is so that the drive's condition doesn't get worse while testing and scanning it with different tools, especially if there's a mechanical issue. Opening a drive should never be done by non-professionals and in a rooms which are not specifically designed for that purpose. What you can try is - data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html, or try accessing the HDD via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if it's properly recognized and if you can get to the data you wish to recover.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
