You can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit -- it doesn't work like that. The question is how you acquired Windows Vista. If it came with your computer (i.e., OEM), then, you need to purchase a valid license for the 64-bit edition. If you bought Windows Vista retail, then, you need to do a "custom install," but that means that the other programs won't carryover.

If a version came with your computer, thats the one for your system. Manufacturers dont put 32 bit OSs on 64 bit computers. If it came with a 64 bit OS, you could, nonsensically, install a 32 bit, but don't. Just don't. If it came with 64, then go buy a new 64 bit OS. BTW, based on your question exactly, there is no conversion from one to the other.

Hi Mikeforyou60, you can install either 32 or 64 bit version of the vista you have the oem licence for, e.g. if you have vista business on your desktop you can install either 32 or 64 bit version of it. The only thing to look out for is if youre going from 32 to 64 bit, is if youve got enough ram etc, check the requirements for the 64 bit version but it should be ok. You will have to save all your personal stuff, aquire a vista 64 bit disk and do a fresh install of that version, but you can use the licence you originally got with the desktop.
