Hello. My friends computer, which he bought prebuild, cant start up whenever we start the computer, it says something about the disk is corrupt. it counts down to verifying system files, but if you click a random button or not, it just goes black screen. any idea how to fix this? any thing to do in the bios or the boot menu? or just a new harddrive and operating system?

Thank you for your help

Hey there, Noldemor!

Seems like the HDD has failed, I'd recommend you to test it using another computer or using a DOS version of a diagnostic tool from the HDD's manufacturer. If you can't find one, you can use Data LifeGuard Diagnostics (DOS) as well: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=uwx3nU
If you have the installation media of the current Windows OS or if it was pre-installed when your friends bought the computer, you won't need a new OS. The operating system communicates with the motherboard, whereas the HDD is just a carrier for the system files.
I believe you'd need a new HDD and then you can simply clean install your OS version using the MS guidelines: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/clean-install
If you encounter any issues with the Windows activation, you should contact their customer support.

Good luck! Hope this was helpful!
Cheers, :)
